Followed - London International Film Festival

In May of 2021, I was approached by animator Marie Geert Jensen to provide the sound for her short film ‘Followed’, which would be screened at the London International Film Festival.

Inspired by the real-life anxiety woman experience walking on their own, the film follows a young woman walking home, until she notices a cloaked man in close pursuit. The sound in Followed was designed specifically so that the audience could feel the same sense of dread and anxiety of the main character.

The film begins with an soundscape of London’s urban nightlife with sounds of traffic, distant chatter from passer-by’s, and the muffled music of a nearby house party. When the anxiety settles in, the ambience quickly transforms into a haunting soundscape, where rapid heartbeats and piercing drone sounds cut through the noise.

Being influenced by the sound design of Silent Hill, my goal was to make sure the audience could effectively feel the same dread of the character. This included using a Sherpard-Tone layered over multiple octaves, as well as distorted reese-bass to add a sense of uneasiness to the sub-bass and bass frequencies.
