Symbols - London International Film Festival

In May of 2021, I was approached by animator Ke Ren to provide the sound and music for ‘Symbols’, a short animated film that would be used to introduce the Abstract category for the London International Animation Festival. The animation is inspired by Ke Ren’s own experience with language and communication, more specifically how we can communicate feelings and emotions through abstract imagery and symbols.

The sound and music for this animation was designed specifically with the concept of language and communication in mind. Many of the sounds that appear throughout the film use spoken word recordings that have been warped and manipulated, in order to further portray the idea of abstract language.

The soundtrack for the animation also uses a vocal acapella sample, which has been manipulated via granular synthesis to provide changes in timbre and harmony.

The following video demonstrates how the spoken word recordings were manipulated to achieve the final effect.
